Choosing a Suitable Domain Name For My New Blog

In this article I am going to describe, how to choose a suitable domain name for your blog, I am also going to discuss what are the key factors which you need to take care of before you book a domain. First of all, I am going to explain what is a domain name and why you need it? A domain name is the unique address of your website or blog, which user will be using to access your website or blog on internet. What you do if you need to access Facebook or Gmail? You simply type www.facebook.com or www.gmail.com in your browser and it will take you on that web page. So www.facebook.com or www.gmail.com are the unique addresses here which take you to desired web pages. So here the domain name are Facebook and Gmail i.e. the word between www. and .com.

Now let’s discuss what are the key points which we need to keep in mind while choosing the domain name.

Choose a relevant and meaningful domain name. Try to choose a domain name which is relevant to your blog. Your domain name should be giving the basic idea of the blog which your blog will be containing. You can have meaningful word or combination of the words as your domain name. Meaningful domain names are easy to remember, user friendly and will be easily searched in search engines.

Keep your domain name short. Try to keep your domain name as shorter as you can. However, these days find a short domain name has become a big job because billions of short domain names are already booked but try your best to get a shorter domain name. Short domain names are easy to remember. Generally, domain name with less than 15 characters is considered good.

Avoid special characters and numbers in your domain name. Try to avoid special characters like underscore ‘_’ and hyphen ‘-‘ because these are not user friendly and also these are not easily indexed by search engines. Also, try avoiding to have numbers like 1, 2, 3 etc. in the domain name because these are not user friendly.

Decide which extension you want to go with. By extension I mean .com, .net, .org, .gov, .edu, .co.in, .co.uk etc. First of all, you need to understand the difference between these extensions.
.com is used for commercial websites or blogs in USA however this is worldwide accepted. .com is the most common extension in the market.
.net is used for service providers on the internet.
.org is used by non-profit institutions.
.gov is used for governments sectors.
.edu is used for educational purposes.
.co.in is used for denoting that website or blog belongs to India.
.co.uk is used for denoting that website or blog belongs to United Kingdom.
Almost every well know country has their extensions available.

But the interesting thing here is that there is no hard and fast rule of using any domain extension for specific purpose. You can use .com extension for non-commercial purposes. You can use .org for profitable purposes. But it can be misleading for your users if they find any irrelevant domain extension. So try taking the relevant domain extension only.  If your user will be belonging to some specific country, then you can take extension belonging to that country. For Example if you think that your users will be from India only then you can take extension as .co.in. Another benefit of taking country specific extension is that the local search engines like www.google.co.in or www. google.co.uk will prefer country specific domains belonging to their country in their search results.

Next you need to check that whether the domain name you want is available or not. I am describing this in my next article ‘How to Purchase a Domain Name and Hosting Space‘. Good luck with your domain selection. :) :) :)
